I recently picked up a new-to-me Rivian R1T to replace my 21 year old Toyota Tacoma PreRunner and I’ve got to say, it is hands down the best kayak fishing adventure truck on the planet. The storage is amazing. In this short video I only show you a portion of the reasons why I feel this way.

The Backstory

My first foray into electric vehicles was a Standard Range Plus Tesla Model 3 which we owned for 4 years before selling it for a great price to Carvana and upgrading to a Tesla Model Y. Once I shook off the range anxiety of the Model 3, upgrading to a Model Y wasn’t an issue as it came with far more range.

When I got the Tacoma the thought was that I’d only use it for hauling my kayak to the marsh. Well, over the years it’s use expanded. However, there was a problem. The issue? It was a single bench seat that held only two people. That said, when both of us were in the truck I had to drive because the bench seat would only adjust to one position and I needed far more legroom than my wife. In addition, although reliable, it was getting old. So I found myself wanting a new truck. Since I had experienced all of the benefits of owning an electric vehicle I thought, why not an electric truck?

Electric Trucks

The real issue is that there aren’t very many electric trucks on the market. I desperately wanted Toyota to produce a Tacoma eV. However, Toyota for quite some time thought that they’d change everyone’s mind by investing in hydrogen. The CEO was replaced and the new one still hasn’t rushed out a Tacoma eV but he’s teased it. So Toyota was no bueno.

Tesla? Well, their leader decided to take years to produce a futuristic behemoth that only some will enjoy. The Cyber Truck is just now rolling out to the market. If you haven’t seen one in person I’d recommend you do. It’s truly a truly “back to the future” like vehicle if you catch my drift. Anyway, my personal opinion is that it’s ugly, and way too big. I wanted something like a cross between a Toyota Tacoma (size and functionality) and a Tesla Model Y (technology).

Well, it turns out Rivian produced something like that a few years earlier and with over-the-air (OTA) updates they caught up pretty quickly to Tesla from a technology point of view. Don’t get me wrong, it’s got some additional ground to cover but it’s some really small stuff that they need to focus on. Thus, when a used one came available I jumped at the chance to own one. And I couldn’t be happier.

Enjoy the video!
